Our Executive Director

Chris Alford

I started drinking as a High School senior to fit in and got my PhD in alcohol with honors in college.  Time passed. I got married, started a family, built a thriving public speaking business, yet traded it all for King Alcohol.

We all have our stories.

A friend invited me to my first AA meeting.  Thank goodness for AA. I started attending meetings regularly.

I soon learned how to listen and began reading the pages of our basic text including the 12 steps. I memorized one sentence that held particular meaning to me. "Our very lives as ex problem drinkers depend upon our constant thought of others and how we may help meet their needs."

(AA Big Book p20 There is a Solution)

It took some time, but I memorized it.  I owned that sentence. I began to live that sentence, putting my own "Hope In Motion" so to speak.

Memorizing one concept and applying it offered me a starting point, a framework.  That frame allowed me to grow and weave the very fabric of recovery life into the fabric of my life.  I continue to meet people just like me and develop meaningful friendships with others.  I had finally realized that I needed to let go absolutely. So I did.

Freedom.

A power greater than myself, God as I understand him, moved into my life.  My AA brothers continue to encourage me to keep moving towards that power. I finally realized that I was the one who was shielding myself from his direction and love.  No longer was I to be a prisoner, but a free man. My God had been there for me the whole time.  His hand on my heart.

I would go on to admit deep down inside, that I needed to take footsteps of faith and stay in action. Through those two actions, he would guide my paths. Once I submitted to him, became willing, and accepted things as they were, my life changed.  Quite suddenly, I began to see miracles unfold all around me and my life. *

Today I have an opportunity to live it.

One day at a time.

Hope In Motion.
